Oppose PA Marriage Protection Amendment!

On February 14, State Senator Michael Brubaker introduced SB 1250, a “Marriage Protection Amendment,” that would limit marriage to one man and one woman, and prohibit civil unions and other relationship recognition. SB 1250 has 18 co-sponsors, and has been referred to the Judiciary Committee.

We need everyone to please e-mail, call, and visit their State Senator and ask them to OPPOSE this bill! It only takes a minute, and can really make a difference in slowing any momentum to move this bill to the Senate floor.

Hello everyone! At our regular meeting, someone thought it would be helpful to see an example of how you can contact friends and strangers about taking action on the PA marriage amendment. Please ask all GLBT supporters to write letters. It’s amazing what one email can accomplish- in a letter to my cousin and a few others, I received back about 20 very interested replies and heartening votes of opposition to the amendment. In addition, those 20 people are all contacting their supportive friends, family, and local organizations to spread the word. See what you can do! And let us all know how you are doing by posting on Pride’s wall or replying to this post!

Here’s a letter to my friends, to give you an idea of what I’m asking. A variation would be sent to members of GLBT groups at other universities:

Dear Friends,

Today I write you as a student representative for Pride Alliance. Pride Alliance is an IUP student organization on campus seeking to promote activism on GLBT issues.

We have taken up a letter writing campaign to oppose PA Senate Bill 1250, a proposal for a Pennsylvania Constitutional Amendment. It seeks to redundantly forbid same-sex marriage, but also it would also prohibit civil unions, and likely affect other forms of relationship recognition, such as domestic partner benefits.

Taking steps to deny legal recognition of unmarried families is not only bad for Pennsylvania, but puts union-bargained contracts already recognizing such families at risk.

Please consider at least sending a form letter of opposition to your PA Senators. More information and such a letter can be found at this address: http://eqfed.org/campaign/marriage_protection_amendment_07 .

To send your own letter, find your Senator’s contact information on the PA State Senate Website: http://www.pasen.gov/index.cfm . Input your zip code into the grey box in the upper right hand corner.

To read the bill for yourself, go here:http://www.legis.state.pa.us/cfdocs/billinfo/billinfo.cfm?syear=2007&sind=0&body=S&type=B&BN=1250

As a public advocate for same-sex civil rights, I urge you to take action on this issue.
As a woman fighting to remove tall barriers from my own future, I am asking this of you as a friend.

P.S. Please pass this information on to everyone you know who is in favor of same-sex civil rights. The deadline for this action is March 15.
